ROWING QUEENSLAND’S DEVELOPMENT PATHWAY 

What is the Rowing Queensland Development Pathway? 

The RQ development pathway outlines the opportunities for athletes to aspire to on their journey to state and national representative rowing. From school-aged to under 22 athletes, the pathway involves representing QLD at national-level competitions and supporting these athletes in developing core competencies required to excel in rowing. Examples of core competencies that will be developed through these experiences, include: 

  • experiencing in seat racing as a selection tool 
  • aligning athletes from different clubs/regions into the same technical model 
  • experiencing different coaching styles, and  
  • development of race plans to execute and succeed on race day.   

What teams and events are part of the RQ Development Pathway? 

The RQ Development Pathway will cater for athletes from under 18 to under 22 and will be defined by four key teams.

The teams include: 

  • QLD Rising – U19 Australian Team trialist squad to compete at the Rowing Australia (RA) U19 Australian Team Selection Trials 
  • QLD Emerging Talent - U18 eight (boys and girls 8+) to compete at the RA Pathways regatta 
  • QLD Regional Emerging Talent - U19 coxless quad (boys and girls 4x) to compete at the RA Pathways regatta 
  • QLD Oceania Team - U22 athletes (incl. sweep, scull, lightweights and para) to compete at the U22 Oceania Teams' Rowing Championships 

When and where are the competitions held?

For the 2026 season, the teams will compete at the following venues and dates.

  • QLD Rising – U19 Australian Team Selection Trials at Sydney International Regatta Centre (SIRC), April 13 - 14,  2026.
  • QLD Emerging & Regional Emerging Talent Teams – RA Pathways Regatta at SIRC, April 13 - 14, 2026.
  • QLD Oceania Team – U22 Oceania Teams’ Rowing Championships at Wyaralong Dam, May 22 - 24, 2026.

How do I get involved? 

For athletes, complete the athlete nomination form and let us know which teams you’re interested in trialling for. Also check out the event requirements for each team and ensure you're taking part in the required selection activities. 

For coaches, complete the coach nomination form to let us know which teams you’re interested in. This will ensure you’re included in any distribution of information. 

For clubs, ensure your club members are aware of the RQ development pathway and what’s required of them to be considered for these opportunities.

This squad comprises of QLD’s leading U19 athletes seeking selection into the Australian Under 19 Rowing Team.

Athletes and crews will be identified and ratified by the QAS Head Coach with consultation from the RA Head of Pathways coach and coaches actively involved in the development of our leading under 19 athletes. These athletes will be identified from performances from State and Australian Rowing Championships and where required, seat racing may be conducted by QAS after the Australian Rowing Championships.  

Objective: 

  • Select the most competitive QLD-based crews to compete for selection in the Under 19 Australian Rowing Team 

  • Target athletes, crews and coaches that will have best chance of selection in the team. 

Selection Criteria: 

  • Meeting national 2000m ergometer benchmarks as outlined by RA 

  • Complete RA selection criteria, including 2km ergometer testing by 17 March 

  • Producing competitive results in Under 19 or school-aged events at the QLD and/or NSW Rowing Championships or Australian Rowing Championship 

  • Where required, complete final seat selection event in QLD prior to the U19 Australian rowing trials to finalise QLD crews to attend the selection regatta 

  • Consideration of athlete conduct, coach recommendations and recent performances.

Historically known as the Pathway Eight, this team will be the QLD Emerging Talent Team for under 18 athletes from across Queensland who demonstrate potential for future Australian Under 19 selection in the following season and beyond. 

This initiative ensures that developing athletes are identified early and provided opportunities to further develop their skills in a competitive environment with their peers.  

Objectives: 

  • Provide a high-performance development environment for emerging athletes 

  • Enhance the depth and competitiveness of Queensland’s junior talent pool 

  • Opportunity to observe and understand the U19 Australian rowing team selection process, in preparation for future selection opportunities 

  • Support early identification and preparation of future Junior Trialists.

Historically known as the Pathway Quad, this team will be for under 19 athletes from across Queensland’s regional schools and clubs who demonstrate potential for future Queensland pathway representation. 

The Regional Emerging Talent Quad for both boys and girls, will focus on top-performing under 19 athletes within regional programs who haven’t been selected for either the QLD Rising or Emerging Talent U18 8+ teams, but show potential for future high-performance progression. 

Objectives: 

  • Technical and physical development aligned with RA technical models 

  • Collaboration between regional schools and clubs to support year-round athlete development 

  • Increased visibility and connection of regional athletes to QLD development opportunities.

The QLD Oceania U22 Championship Team targets athletes 18 -21 years old, who show potential to excel in future years at the state and national representative level. This team provides opportunities for athletes to train and race with QLD athletes across multiple boat categories, against other states. This team includes competition for sweep-oared, sculling, lightweight and para athletes. 

Objectives: 

  • Diverse national-level racing opportunities for athletes across multiple boat categories to continue to build experience 

  • Opportunity to train and race with different club athletes and under different coaches for further development 

  • Exposure to seat-racing and other selection requirements to prepare for future selection on state and national teams.
