New Zealand Take Out 2010 Youth Cup with Queensland in Third

New Zealand will fly back home with the Rusty Robertson Cup stored safely in hand luggage.  The Kiwis starred throughout all three days of competition at the Australian Youth Cup championships, forging such a strong point-score lead within just the first day’s racing that the Australian states were left battling for second place.  New Zealand won medals in all boat sizes and from both their men’s and womens teams to win the Youth Cup with 121 points – a staggering 39 points ahead of second-palced NSW.

Despite the winning margin, the battle for second place was intense, New South Wales inching out Queensland by just two points with West Australia only three points behind that.

New Zealand brought a professional aspect to the Youth Cup event, having selected their team early and trainign consistently. It will be a queue the Ausrtlaian state competitors will need to follow if the Rusty Robertson Cup is to return to Australian shores.

Day 3's racing started on a low note with the Men's Eight not qualifying for the A Final.  They fought back however to record a very convincing victory in the B Final to finish their regatta on a high note.

The competing states were then allocated partners for the Mixed Lightweight reserve Quad, with Queensand being paired with Victoria.  Having finished third and second in their doubles on Day 2 they formed a strong crew, with the Queenslanders Ella Peacock and Cameron Rumball eager to build on their medal tallies.  Again a fantastic race developed with the ever-present New Zealanders who were joined by the South Australians.  With no more then a canvas seperating the two crews over the course it was the Kiwis and Redbacks who finished just ahead by less then a second as the Queenslanders and Victorians took silver.

The Women's Eight finished the regatta on a high note taking bronze in the A Final, a length behind the Victorians in second and New Zealand in first.  Congratulations to the crew of Leah Billing, Fiona Albert, Anna Kaszycki, Jenny Krippner, Karly Scott, Charlotte Travers, Bronty Morris and Alana Hewish and the cox Libby Salisbury.

Rowing QLD would like to congratulate all of our athletes who represented the state for a fantastic regatta and congratulate them on their performances.  A full point score is below, for a full list of results and the regatta website please click here.
